What is Remarkably Us?

Video transcript

My name is Nancy Correa, and I am the founder of Remarkably Us. The mission of Remarkably Us is to amplify the narrative and the underrepresented voices of Latinas in the foster care system through transformative experiences, skill development, and mentorship. Ultimately, we really want to reshape trajectories.

I founded Remarkably Us with the objective of bridging the gap between current foster youth Latinas and former foster youth Latinas, and building a beautiful, sister-like community. Growing up in the foster care system myself, I never felt like I could identify with anyone. I never heard any positive stories of former Latinas who grew up in the foster care system and were now professionals. I felt a lot of shame in my story. It wasn't until I was in college that I started speaking more about it, and I felt that  I needed to find that sister-like community that would understand me and the different barriers that foster youth Latinas go through under the care of the system.

We're here to show them that it's not impossible—that they can make it.

Hi, my name is Elvira Laguna, and I am a board member for Remarkably Us. I was in the foster care system for about 11 years. I currently oversee a housing program for foster youth. I connect with Remarkably Us so much because, as an Afro-Latina in the foster care system, I didn’t have a lot of opportunities growing up. While being in the system, I’ve reflected on my past and recognized how impactful any mentorship, partnership, or opportunity has been for my life. I believe Remarkably Us can truly become a launchpad for someone’s success.

My name is Jacqueline Robles, and I’m a board member at Remarkably Us. Growing up in foster care myself as a Latina and Native American, I never saw people who looked like me succeed or make it out. I always saw people who looked like me falling victim to the statistics, whether that was being incarcerated, homeless, or having their own kids in the system.

What drew me to Remarkably Us is that, when I aged out of foster care, became an adult, and achieved some success, I wanted to give back and ensure that other people who look like me have the same opportunities I did because I know I didn’t do it alone.

Remarkably Us: inspiring change and leaving our mark.
